Trecut de vârsta de 80 de ani, Gheorghe Briceag, cunoscut disident şi militat pentru drepturile omului în Republica Moldova, a încetat din viaţă, sâmbăta trecută — 16 august 2008 –, în oraşul Bălţi, transmite Agenţia DECA-press.
Cei care l-au cunoscut şi preţuit pe Gheorghe Briceag i-au adus un ultim omagiu duminică, 17 august. Gheorghe Briceag, supranumit „ultimul disident” din Republica Moldova, a fost înmormântat în partea veche a cimitirului din Bălţi.
În anii ’40 ai secolului trecut, pentru că organizase unul din primele grupuri de rezistenţă antisovietică din Basarabia, Gheorghe Briceag a fost condamnat la zece ani de GULAG stalinist, iar ulterior la şapte ani de exil.
În ultimii ani, Gheorghe Briceag a devenit simbol al luptei cu comunismul. El s-a opus cu vehemenţă intenţiilor autorităţilor locale şi Partidului Comuniştilor de a reinstala monumentul lui Lenin în centrul oraşului Bălţi. Briceag ameninţase că se va autoincendia dacă va fi reinstalat monumentul „tătucului”.
Gheorghe Briceag a fost membru al Amnesty International şi vicepreşedinte al Comitetului Helsinki pentru Drepturile Omului, filiala Bălţi.
În aprilie 2005, Fundaţia „People in Need” din Praga (Cehia) i-a acordat lui Gheorghe Briceag premiul „Homo Homini” pentru anul 2004 „pentru contribuţie la apărarea drepturilor omului în R. Moldova şi pentru opunerea sa procesului de reinstalare a simbolurilor şi ideologiei sovietice”.

Gheorghe Briceag, „the last dissident” from the Republic of Moldova, passed away
At the age of more than 80 years old, Gheorghe Briceag, well-known dissident and fighter for human rights in the Republic of Moldova, passed away last Saturday — 16 August –, in Balti town, DECA-press Agency transmits.
Those who have known and appreciated Gheorghe Briceag came to see him for the last time on Sunday, August 17th. Gheorghe Briceag, also called „the last dissident” from the Republic of Moldova, was buried in the old part of the cemetery from Balti.
In the 40s of the last century, Gheorghe Briceag was condemned to ten years of Stalinist GULAG for having organized one of the first groups of anti-Soviet resistance from Basarabia. After that, he was condemned to seven years of exile.
In the last few years, Gheorghe Briceag has become a symbol of the fight against communism. He has seriously resisted the intentions of the local authorities and the Communist Party to reinstall Lenin’s monument in the centre of Balti town. Briceag threatened that he would burn himself if the monument under consideration were installed.
Gheorghe Briceag was a member of Amnesty International and deputy-president of Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, Balti office.
In April 2005, the Foundation „People in Need” from Prague (Czech Republic) awarded Gheorghe Briceag the title „Homo Homini” for the year 2004 “for contribution to the defence of human rights in the Republic of Moldova and for the opposition against the reinstallation of Soviet symbols and ideology”.

Умер Георге Бричаг, «последний диссидент» Республики Молдова
В субботу в муниципии Бэлць на восьмидесятом году жизни скончался известный диссидент и борец за права человека в Республике Молдова Георге Бричаг, – передает агентство ДЕКА-пресс.
В воскресенье, 17 августа, проводить в последний путь «последнего диссидента» Республики Молдова пришли все, кто знал и ценил Георгия Бричаг.
Георге Бричаг был похоронен на старом кладбище в муниципии Бэлць. В 40-х годах прошлого века Георге Бричаг организовал одну из первых ячеек антибольшевистского сопротивления, за что был приговорен к 10 годам лагерей и семи годам ссылки.
В последние годы Георге Бричаг стал одним из символом борьбы с коммунизмом. Он отчаянно сопротивлялся намерению местных властей и городской организации Партии коммунистов установить памятник Ленину в центре города Бэлць. Георге Бричаг заявил, что совершит акт самосожжения, если власти все же установят памятник «вождю мирового пролетариата».
Георге Бричаг был членом организации Amnesty International и заместителем председателя бельцкого филиала Комитета Хельсинки за права человека.
В апреле 2005 года пражский Фонд „People in Need” (Чехия) присвоил Георгию Бричаг премию „Homo Homini” за 2004 год «за вклад в защиту прав человека в Республике Молдова и сопротивление процессу восстановления символов советской идеологии».
